IN THE NAME OF THE NATURE IN MY HOMELAND

I am Jori Alasirniö, a 34-year-old man and the founder of SunSilva. I live in the village of Sirniö, located on the border of Lapland, about a hundred kilometers from the Arctic Circle (and 170 kilometers from Santa Claus). Until now, I have earned my living mainly in the forest industry, working as a forest machine operator, a saplings attendant, a forest planter, and a forest fertilization specialist.

I come from a family for which the forest means a lot, and this was certainly one of the reasons why I ended up working in the forest industry. Nature has been a way of life for me and my family.

In general, all the aspects of our lives are somehow linked to nature and our forests.

What is nature to you?

For me, it's all the different smells, colors, sounds or even the silence. And not to  forget all the animals. Nature surprises with its beauty and power. Nature to me is autumn's bright mornings with sunrises that explode in colours of brilliance, nature is the magical force that brings the first bud of spring to life and we humans are part of nature!

We are growing new forests, and it’s a long process. By maintaining and respecting the traditions and spirit of the place, we appreciate nature and the people we work with.

In addition to the afforestation service, we can sell the trees from our old-growth forests to you or your company! Together we can create protected areas with a unique atmosphere.

The forests you plant through SunSilva will grow for at least a hundred years!

IT’S TIME TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

Properly performed, emission compensations can be an effective and proven means of sequestering carbon dioxide. Photosynthesis is behind this phenomenon. We can speed up the rate of photosynthesis by increasing the forest area. The byproduct oxygen is produced during photosynthesis.
One solid cubic meter of wood binds about 1000 kg of carbon dioxide.

For now, I live in a clean environment with a proper climate and snowy winters. We want to ensure that our children and grandchildren also get to enjoy pure nature.

The ocean is made of drops, so we all can invest a comfortable amount of money in a common cause. Small actions and choices can help us achieve great results. None can do this alone.

Our government, companies, public administration, and consumers have taken serious steps toward improving ecology and increasing carbon neutrality. However, the tools and actions to combat climate change are often difficult to make, and/or expensive.

I can easily do my share, and so can you and other like-minded people and companies with the help of SunSilva.

WE AIM AT AN EFFICIENT AND PERMANENT INCREASING DIVERSITY

The intrinsic value of the forest is so much more than mere carbon sequestration. Apart from the visual appeal and cultural heritage, the forest offers a huge environmental capital! The extinction of species is another current threat, along with climate change.

SunSilva offers various tools to easily influence the future of us and our children.

We consider a willow tit the most threatened bird species. The willow tit was among the most abundant birds in Finland for a long time. However, intensive forestry works performed in the 2000s have caused a mild decline in the number of willow tits in 2015 and an extremely high decline in 2019! We now offer a new, vibrant living environment in the form of our very own trees and arbors.

The company Jätkä-Juho from the Finnish municipality Hyrynsalmi collaborates with us on this matter, which is very important to us. We cooperate with young and local entrepreneurs, and we want to build a solid and long-lasting cooperation network, where everyone can do things in a fair and honest way!

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Based on current knowledge, one tree binds approximately 600 kg of carbon dioxide during its life cycle.
  • Finland accounts for approximately 200,000 hectares of peat and unused fields, which release large amounts of carbon dioxide instead of storing carbon. It is estimated that greenhouse gas emissions make up almost 13% of the total national emissions.
  • Forest regeneration is stipulated in the legislation. The forest renewal obligation is fulfilled when the average length of saplings in a sufficiently dense and evenly distributed forest nursery is at least 0.5 meters. The forest nursery should be established in Southern Finland in 10 years and in Central Finland in 15 years. (Earlier, the forest company, which the timber trade was made with, was responsible for forest regeneration. Nowadays, regeneration is a very slow process, which results in a poor-quality outcome)
  • We create forest areas that will never be destroyed! This ensures the true diversity of the forests because in a pristine forest you will encounter species that cannot be found in an intensively cultivated forest.

COME ALONG TO CREATE THE FOREST OF THE FUTURE

SunSilva aims at enhancing the forest area on suitable soils where planting has not been done or has somehow failed. The afforestation areas, which are suitable for planting, can serve as additional forest areas. They include old disused fields, meadows, disused peat production areas, and other wastelands.
